Beta Class Analysis Part XII

Blizzard is asking for feedback on class balance in the Mists of Pandaria Beta. This article continues our coverage of hunter-related discussions in the thread. You can read all of Ghostcrawler’s previous posts regarding hunters in MoP in the WHH MoP Hunter Guide.

Khalique, a hunter, wrote, “Correct me if I’m wrong, but currently there is no way of reducing disarm effects for hunters. I tried transferring a Pyrium Weapon Chain to the beta to see if that works, but that is for melee weapons only. This is a huge problem for the hunter class and basically locks us out for 10 seconds (unless trinketed of course).” [link]

Zeherah replied, “I haven’t tested this myself, but I had read somewhere that the new weapon chain (Living Steel Weapon Chain) is designed to also be applied to ranged weapons. The spell description says ‘Requires One-Handed Axes, Two-Handed Axes, Bows, Guns, One-Handed Maces, Two-Handed Maces, Polearms, One-Handed Swords, Two-Handed Swords, Staves, Fist Weapons, Daggers, Crossbows.’ That being said, it seems like there may also be a requirement to upgrade lower level versions of weapon chains to also support ranged weapons.” [link]

Ghostcrawler replied, “That is the intent, yes.” [link]

Zeherah wrote, “On the topic of weapon damage scaling versus RAP scaling, I was doing some formula verification today and it looks like aimed shot is still using the very strange formula pattern that it was changed to in early Cata. The formula looks to be something like this (I averaged the low and the high damage numbers for the shot):
(dmg of weapon + RAP / 14 * 2.8 + RAP * .724 + 9970.395) * 1.6”

Traditionally most weapon damage scaling hunter abilities have applied the weapon damage multiplier only to the (dmg of weapon + RAP / 14 * 2.8) part, yet, aimed shot applies the multiplier to the entire shot (including the base damage and the straight RAP scaling). It also seems to be one of the few abilities that still contain both a weapon damage scaling and separate RAP scaling- the others seem to have been switched to only be one or the other in MoP.

Is this intentional or has aimed shot just not been tweaked yet to use a more straightforward formula? If this is intentional, could you see the volume of multipliers attached to this ability creating scaling discrepancies for MM?

Update: It looks like chimera shot may be using this same pattern for the formula now too if my tests are correct. This wasn’t the case in Cata.

Ghostcrawler replied, “We can give it a more sane formula. The damage it does is about in the right place.” [link]

Askledarea, a shaman, asked, “[…] Do we still need to wait another build before testing pet scaling, or can we get started once we drag ourselves away from pet battles?” [link]

Ghostcrawler repleid, “Yes, please go nuts. Warlock pet energy regen is something we are still futzing with so that may still be a little squirrely.” [link]
