In the Mists of Pandaria Beta Dungeons thread, Geraith wrote, “Question about the old raids: What happened to all the gold drops? MC bosses (that actually drop gold) currently on Live drop 60-90g, with Rag dropping upwards of 150g+. On Beta they drop a couple G each. Every TBC boss on Live gives 250g, end bosses drop 300g. Just did Void Reaver and got a total of 10g (that was including half the trash in his room I pulled with him). This isn’t a cool change. :/” [link]
Watcher replied, “In general, enemies in raids and dungeons drop significantly more gold than outdoor foes, specifically because we are assuming that the gold is going to be split 5, 10, or 25 ways. As player power rises over time, it obviously becomes possible to complete old content with significantly fewer players, such that the gold rewards become disproportionately high.
In the past, our only solution was to drastically reduce the gold dropped by legacy content across the board (e.g., Magtheridon, much of Karazhan, etc.). In Mists, we have a new system in place that normalizes gold yield based on the number of players involved in the kill. If a Black Temple enemy drops 100 gold today on live, and you kill it with a 25-player raid group in Mists, it’ll also drop 100 gold and each player will get 4 gold. If you solo Black Temple, that enemy will also give you 4 gold. If you do it with 4 friends, it’ll drop 20 gold and each of you will get 4.
In other words, the gold obtained from killing raid or dungeon creatures no longer depends upon how many people you bring, or do not bring, with you. This system does not apply to anything in the outdoor world.

Imaginary asked, “If this is the case, will the original gold values of the bosses in Gruul’s Lair, Magtheridon’s Lair and Karazhan be restored so groups will once again get more gold from the boss than from a single trash mob?” [link]
Watcher replied, “Yes.” [link]
This is uncool …
It is not as if this is a big issue.
The amount of players doing it as % of total populatioon cannot be that gigh. And now – thanks to being in the end-phase of a (not so content rich) expansaion, it is peaking.
The amount of gold is not so high either. People who spend their days working the AH with add-ons have a much bigger effect on prices. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fine with that, but than I don’t get this nerf.
Also there is inflation. Blizzard talks about gear and stats getting better, but forgets that prices of everything and rewards and drops also get bigger. So even if it is a problem – which I dispute – it is getting less of a problem with every new tier. BWL drops more gold than AQ40, which drops more gold than MC.
Also effort-wise it is not that trivial. Sure MC is a farm, but BWL, AQ40 and TK for instance require still skill to do stuff.
All in all, a uncool move from Blizzard. I knwo it is a stab under de belt, but Blizzard already has too little time and people available, and then they spend it on ‘fixing’ this …
Well there goes my gold making, I guess i have to go back to stabbing my self in the eyes with the end of my gun and do daily’s again (I HATE daily’s).
I agree. It’s not a new issue but there doesn’t seem to be much point in removing some of the fun factor from running old raids. It doesn’t hurt anyone, and it provides an alternate source of income for those who would rather be out adventuring than doing dailies or playing the AH.
It’s sad, it removes any reason to solo anything more than once for those who want the challenge. I liked doing the raids I can solo for quite a darn few resets after clearing them the first time, and the gold was an important motivational factor. With that gone, I don’t see myself soloing any boss more than once in MoP :(
