Ultraxion: Strategy for Hunters

Ultraxion is the fifth boss in the Dragon Soul raid instance. As a hunter, you only need to do two things during this fight: pour on the dps and use Heroic Will at just the right moments. In 25-man mode you might also need to soak an Hour of Twilight using Deterrence:

  • There’s a lot of raid damage in this encounter, so stay grouped up for AoE heals. You won’t have to move at all for this fight.
  • Some hunters are reporting that the wind serpent/dragonhawk debuff is not being consistently applied to Ultraxion. To overcome this you can macro lightning breath or fire breath with your regularly used shots.
  • There will be time for back to back Rapid Fires (for marksmanship hunters) before the first Hour of Twilight. When Rapid Fire comes off cooldown again, use it just after an Hour of Twilight. After six minutes, Ultraxion will enrage and wipe the raid.
  • There are two mechanics you’ll need to watch for: Hour of Twilight and Fading Light.
  • Hour of Twilight: This boss ability has a five second cast time and when it completes it does a huge amount of damage to everyone in the Twilight Realm. Think Alganon’s Big Bang. Before this cast completes, everyone except designated soakers will need to escape the Twilight Realm by using the Heroic Will ability.
    • One or more players are required to stay in the Twilight Realm and soak damage during Hour of Twilight (In normal 10 difficulty, one player must remain; in normal 25, three players must remain).
    • If you are assigned to soak an Hour of Twilight, you can mitigate it with Deterrence.
    • If you’re not soaking the Hour of Twilight, use Heroic Will just before Ultraxion’s Hour of Twilight cast completes.
      • To use Heroic Will, press the Heroic Will button that will be visible on your screen if you’re using the standard Blizzard UI:
      • If you’re using UI mods, the button might not be visible and/or accessible. In this case you can create a keybinding for ExtraActionButton1 or use this macro: /click ExtraActionButton1
  • Fading Light: Between each Hour of Twilight, Ultraxion will twice apply the Fading Light debuff to the main tank and one or more DPS (one in 10-man and three in 25-man). The debuff has a random duration of from five to ten seconds.
    •  If Fading Light is cast on you, glance at the number of seconds on the debuff and use the Heroic Will ability when there are less that five seconds left.
