WoW Hunters Hall January Traffic Report

It’s that time again — time to take a look at the traffic stats for WoW Hunters Hall in January. We’re beginning to slip into the doldrums of the expansion, that end of expansion period where no new content is being released and online interest in the game begins to slow down and soon the only news to report is news of the next expansion. Personally on the WHU I’ve seen this before and you can probably expect non-MoP related traffic to decline across all WoW sites for the next several months.

Here at the WHH that means that our January was actually ever so slightly slower than December — which sucks, because December is a slow month, though the total number of pageviews was in fact higher despite fewer people visiting the site. This is coupled with the gradual loss over the last few months of just about everyone who was working on the WHH. The site is now maintained almost entirely by just two people. To be blunt, I hope they continue to be superheros, because the WHH collects hunter news for tens of thousands of hunters and it would suck if it went away — but in the end there is really almost no one from the hunter community willing to maintain it.

On that grim note, lets move on with the stats — which are still pretty darned impressive!

Traffic Overview

In January WoW Hunters Hall had 46,494 visits and 108,180  page views, with a total of 26,846  unique visitors. This is slightly fewer visits and unique visitors, yet slightly more pageviews than December.

The traffic split between search engines, referring sites, and direct visits is almost identical to December, with again a majority (or plurality technically) of traffic coming from search engines, which is a good thing. It’s from the search engines that we’re most likely to attract new users of the WHH.

Referring Sites

The top referring sites (sites with a link to WoW Hunters Hall that people clicked on to get here) breaks down as follows:

Keywords

The top several keyword phrases were variations of WoW Hunters Hall, accounting for about 4.9% of all search traffic. The top non-branded keyword phrases driving traffic were:

  • shannox heroic hunters guide
  • survival rotation 4.3
  • elitist jerks
  • best hunter spec
  • hunter 4.3 gear
  • hunter transmogrification
  • hunter gear 4.3

Hottest Hunter Articles

Of the 108,180 page views WoW Hunters Hall received in January, 19.66% were the home page. After that the top viewed pages were as follows. Note that while this is interesting data, articles posted early in the month have an advantage, and those posted at the very end have a severe disadvantage (given the amount of time they have to collect views for the month).

A really interesting facet of the top January articles is the way that the strategy guides  are so popular (and most of these come from Tabana, so rhok on Tabs!) The popularity of Tabana’s curated page of guides (which is awesome) is largely due to some changes I made so that it shows up much better in search engines now.
